Website Security Enhancement Guide Website Protection Strategies

Website Security

1. Regular backups
This is the most basic but most often overlooked part of your website security strategy. By regularly backing up all of your website data and storing it on a secure offline device, you can restore all of your content in a relatively short period of time, even if your entire website is destroyed by a hacker.

2. Protecting your website with HTTPS and SSL
Make sure that your web hosting provider activates HTTPS on all folders of your website that contain sensitive data. then contact your domain name provider and purchase an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate and have the hosting company install it on your website.

The certificate encrypts all communications between the user's web browser and the server that stores your site. This is why, without an SSL certificate, most browsers immediately mark as “not secure” websites that request sensitive data, such as credit card information. Google also prefers sites with SSL certificates installed and ranks them higher than sites without this feature.

3. Change your login information regularly
This is so basic yet so important that I feel compelled to repeat it: change your website login details every few weeks. The day a hacker decides he or she wants access to any information you have stored there, he or she will relentlessly continue to try to gain access until they succeed. Don't use your spouse's name or your birthday because it's easy to remember. Make it impossible for hackers to guess your website login details by using a mix of letters, numbers and special characters.

4. Granting access only to a limited number of users
The more people who have access to your site's data, the greater the potential for a security breach. Grant access only to those who really need it to do their jobs. And don't provide a single password to more than one person. Make sure each person has their own login details and only provide them with the minimum access they need to get their job done. Once that person leaves the company, plug the leak. Disgruntled ex-employees are one of the biggest threats when it comes to leaking sensitive data.

5. Regular updating of website software
Cyber attacks are often automated and hackers use bots to find vulnerable websites. That's why you should always use the latest version of software such as CMS, plugins, WordPress, etc.

6. Choosing the right web hosting company
Your website security is as good as your web hosting company. If your website contains any sensitive data, trying to save 2 dollars a month by signing up with a small web hosting company in a country you have never heard of before is not the best option. You must be able to trust your hosting provider that it will protect your website and all its data.

Also, consider that the vast majority of cheap hosting plans are on shared servers. This means that your site will be sharing the server with hundreds of other sites. And, even if one of those sites is compromised, it can help hackers gain access to all the others. Of course, a dedicated server will be more expensive, but it will greatly improve your site's security.
